## A Partnership of Two Materials

Concrete is remarkably strong in compression but weak in tension. Steel is excellent in tension but can buckle under compression. When you combine the two, you get reinforced concrete: a composite material that handles both forces with confidence. This partnership has been the backbone of construction worldwide since the late 19th century.

At AVANORTH, reinforced concrete is at the heart of what we do. From residential foundations to commercial high-rises, understanding how rebar and concrete work together is fundamental to our craft.

## How Reinforcement Works

Steel reinforcing bars (rebar) are placed inside concrete formwork before the pour. As the concrete cures and hardens around the steel, the two materials bond together mechanically through the ribbed surface of the rebar. When loads are applied, the concrete resists compression while the steel carries the tensile forces.

This synergy works because steel and concrete have nearly identical coefficients of thermal expansion. They expand and contract at the same rate with temperature changes, preventing internal stress from tearing the bond apart. It is one of the most fortunate coincidences in engineering.

## Types of Reinforcement

### Deformed Rebar

The most common type, with ridges along its surface that grip the surrounding concrete. Available in grades from 300 to 500 MPa yield strength, it is specified by structural engineers based on the loads the element must carry.

### Welded Wire Mesh

Used primarily in slabs and walls, wire mesh provides distributed reinforcement over large areas. It controls cracking from shrinkage and temperature changes rather than carrying heavy structural loads.

### Fibre Reinforcement

Steel, synthetic, or glass fibres mixed directly into the concrete improve crack resistance and impact strength. Fibre reinforcement supplements but does not replace conventional rebar in structural applications.

## Designing for Durability

The longevity of reinforced concrete depends on protecting the steel inside it. Corrosion of rebar is the leading cause of concrete deterioration. When steel corrodes, it expands, creating internal pressure that cracks and spalls the surrounding concrete.

Engineers specify adequate concrete cover over the steel to provide a protective barrier. In Canada, the minimum cover ranges from 25 mm for interior elements to 75 mm for elements exposed to de-icing salts and marine environments. The higher the exposure risk, the thicker the cover.

Concrete mix design also matters. Low water-to-cement ratios produce denser concrete that resists moisture and chloride penetration. Air-entrained concrete is standard in Canadian construction to withstand freeze-thaw cycles.

## Real-World Applications

Reinforced concrete is everywhere in Canadian construction:

- **Foundations and footings** that transfer building loads to the soil
- **Basement walls** that resist lateral earth pressure
- **Suspended slabs** in multi-storey buildings
- **Columns and beams** forming the structural frame
- **Retaining walls** holding back soil on sloped sites
- **Bridges and overpasses** carrying traffic loads across spans

## Quality Control on Site

Proper placement of reinforcement is just as important as the design. On every AVANORTH project, we verify:

- Rebar size, grade, and spacing match the structural drawings
- Concrete cover is maintained using chairs and spacers
- Lap splices meet the specified overlap length
- No rebar is displaced during the pour
- Concrete is vibrated adequately to fill around the reinforcement without voids

Inspection before pouring is a checkpoint that cannot be skipped. A missed detail in rebar placement can compromise the structural integrity of the entire element.

## Why Reinforced Concrete Endures

When properly designed, placed, and cured, reinforced concrete structures can last 50 to 100 years or more. The CN Tower in Toronto, the Champlain Bridge in Montreal, and countless buildings across Canada stand as proof that this material combination delivers lasting performance.

At AVANORTH, every rebar tie and every concrete pour reflects our respect for this time-tested system. We build with reinforced concrete because it works, and we work with it because it rewards craftsmanship with decades of dependable service.
