# **Bathroom Renovation Waterproofing Best Practices**

Waterproofing is the most critical element in any bathroom renovation. Failures lead to mould, structural damage, and costly repairs. Understanding membrane systems, proper substrate preparation, and vulnerable areas prevents problems.

A bathroom renovation can transform a home, but behind the tile, fixtures, and finishes is a critical system that determines whether that renovation lasts 5 years or 50: waterproofing. Water damage from failed bathroom waterproofing is one of the most common and expensive residential repairs. It causes mould growth, wood rot, structural damage, and can affect multiple levels of a home. Getting waterproofing right is not complicated, but it requires attention to detail and proper materials.

## Where Water Gets In

| Vulnerable Area | Failure Mode | Prevention |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shower floor (pan) | Membrane failure beneath tile, standing water | Properly sloped substrate, continuous membrane |
| Shower walls | Water penetration through grout joints | Waterproof membrane behind tile (not just backer board) |
| Shower curb | Water wicking through curb, flowing behind membrane | Membrane wraps over curb top and down both sides |
| Valve/fixture penetrations | Water enters around shower valve, showerhead pipe | Sealant and membrane integration at every penetration |
| Floor/wall junction | Movement crack at the joint | Membrane reinforced with fabric at junction |
| Bathtub surround | Water behind wall tile above tub | Waterproof membrane to ceiling height in wet areas |
| Toilet flange | Wax ring failure, condensation | Membrane extends under toilet, proper flange height |

---

## Waterproofing Systems

### 1. Sheet Membrane (Kerdi, etc.)

Pre-manufactured polyethylene sheets bonded to the substrate with thin-set mortar. Tile is then installed directly over the membrane.

- **Pros:** Consistent thickness, factory quality, proven performance, immediate tile installation
- **Cons:** Requires careful cutting and fitting around corners and penetrations, seams must be sealed with preformed corners and bands

### 2. Liquid-Applied Membrane (RedGard, Hydroban, etc.)

Brushed or rolled on as a liquid that dries to form a flexible, continuous waterproof membrane. Usually requires two coats with fabric reinforcement at changes of plane.

- **Pros:** Seamless application, easy for complex geometries, lower material cost
- **Cons:** Requires proper thickness (check mil gauge), drying time between coats, can be inconsistently applied

### 3. Foam Panel System (Kerdi-Board, Wedi, etc.)

Waterproof foam panels that replace both the backer board and the waterproof membrane. The panel itself is waterproof, so the system is installed in one step.

> **Critical Choice:** In a shower, the waterproofing membrane IS the waterproofing. Cement backer board (Durock, Hardiebacker) is moisture-resistant, not waterproof. It will absorb water if the membrane behind the tile fails. The backer board is a substrate for tile; the membrane is the waterproofing. They are different systems with different functions.

---

## Substrate Preparation

| Substrate | Preparation Required | Compatible With |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cement backer board | Score to remove surface glaze, clean | Sheet membrane, liquid membrane |
| Concrete | Clean, no curing compounds, profile open | Sheet membrane, liquid membrane |
| Plywood (floors only) | Clean, dry, screwed (not nailed), joints sealed | Liquid membrane (with fabric) |
| Drywall (NOT in wet areas) | Remove any moisture-damaged drywall | Replace with backer board in wet areas |

---

## Shower Floor (Pan) Detail

1. **Slope:** The substrate must slope to the drain at a minimum of 6 mm per 300 mm (1/4 inch per foot). This slope is built into the mud bed (mortar base) or the pre-sloped foam pan.
2. **Drain connection:** The membrane must integrate with the drain assembly to create a continuous waterproof system. Different drains require different integration methods (clamping ring, bonding flange, or adhesive).
3. **Pre-slope vs. post-slope:** Traditional method has a pre-slope under the membrane and a level surface above. Modern systems (Kerdi, foam) use a single-slope approach with the membrane on top of the sloped surface.

## Testing

Before tiling, the shower pan should be flood-tested:

- Block the drain outlet
- Fill the shower floor with water to the top of the curb
- Mark the water level and wait 24 hours
- If the water level drops, there is a leak that must be found and repaired before tiling

> **AVANORTH Practice:** We waterproof every bathroom as if it were a swimming pool. Continuous liquid-applied or sheet membrane on all wet-area walls (floor to ceiling in showers), all floors, and every penetration sealed. We flood-test every shower pan before tile. The cost difference between proper waterproofing and inadequate waterproofing is small. The cost difference between a waterproof bathroom and one that fails is enormous.
