## Design for How Families Actually Live

The best family homes are not designed to impress visitors. They are designed around the daily routines, needs, and habits of the people who live in them. A home that looks stunning in a magazine but frustrates its occupants with poor circulation, inadequate storage, or impractical layouts has failed at its primary purpose.

Thoughtful residential design starts with understanding the family: How many people live in the home now, and how might that change? What are the daily routines? Where does clutter accumulate? What activities does the family enjoy at home? The answers to these questions should drive the floor plan, not the latest design trends.

## Kitchen: The Heart of the Home

North American families spend more waking time in and around the kitchen than any other room. Kitchen design priorities for families:

- **The work triangle:** The relationship between the sink, stove, and refrigerator should allow efficient movement between tasks. Each side of the triangle should be 1.2 to 2.7 metres, and the total perimeter should not exceed 7.9 metres.
- **Island functionality:** If space allows, a kitchen island provides additional counter space, storage, seating, and separation between the cooking zone and the living area. Minimum clearance around the island: 1.0 metre on all sides for comfortable circulation.
- **Storage capacity:** Families consistently underestimate kitchen storage needs. Plan for more cabinet and pantry space than seems necessary at design stage. A dedicated pantry (walk-in or closet-style) is one of the most valued features in family homes.
- **Sightlines:** Parents of young children value kitchen layouts that provide sightlines to the family room and outdoor play areas.

## Mud Room: The Unsung Hero

A properly designed entry area (mudroom, boot room) near the primary family entrance prevents clutter and mess from spreading into the main living spaces. Key features:

- Individual storage for each family member: hooks, cubbies, and a bench for sitting while removing boots
- Durable, easy-to-clean flooring (tile or vinyl, not hardwood)
- A closet or rack for coats and jackets
- Space for boots, shoes, and winter gear to dry
- If space allows, a small utility sink for hand-washing, cleaning boots, or watering plants

## Bathrooms: Plan for Morning Rush Hour

Families with school-age children experience a daily bottleneck: everyone needs the bathroom at the same time in the morning. Design strategies:

- Separate the toilet and shower from the vanity with a door or pocket door, so one person can use the toilet/shower while another uses the sink and mirror
- A double vanity in the primary bathroom and ideally in the children's shared bathroom
- Plan for a minimum of one bathroom per two bedrooms in homes with three or more bedrooms

## Storage: You Never Have Enough

Storage is the most consistently under-designed feature in Canadian homes. Families accumulate gear: sports equipment, seasonal clothing, holiday decorations, school supplies, hobby materials, outdoor furniture. Design strategies:

- A minimum 2.4 x 3.0 metre storage room accessible from the main floor or garage
- Closets in every bedroom (walk-in for the primary bedroom, reach-in for others)
- Linen closet near the bathrooms
- Coat closet at the front entry
- If the home has a basement, allocate at least one zone for organized storage with shelving

## Outdoor Living

Canadian families use outdoor space intensively for approximately 6 months of the year. Designing the transition between indoors and outdoors enhances livability:

- A covered porch or patio adjacent to the kitchen or family room, accessed through large sliding or folding doors
- Grade-level transition (minimal or no step) between indoor and outdoor living spaces
- Outdoor electrical outlets for lighting, heating, and cooking equipment
- An exterior water bib for hose connection

At AVANORTH, we design family homes starting with conversations about how the family lives. We walk through daily routines, identify pain points in the current home, and design the new home to resolve those issues. The result is a home that fits the family from day one and adapts to their changing needs over time.
