# **Choosing the Right Insulation for Ontario Climate**

Ontario homes face temperature swings from minus 30 to plus 35. The right insulation, correctly installed, keeps your home comfortable year-round while reducing energy costs significantly.

Ontario spans multiple climate zones. Southern Ontario (Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton) is Climate Zone 6. Northern Ontario ranges from Zone 7A to Zone 8. These zones dictate minimum thermal performance requirements that increase with every code cycle.

Choosing insulation is not just about meeting code. It is about selecting the material that performs best for each specific application: R-value per inch, vapour permeability, fire rating, available space, and budget.

## Insulation Comparison at a Glance

| Insulation Type | R-Value per Inch | Air Barrier? | Vapour Barrier? | Cost Level |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fibreglass batts | R-3.2 to R-3.8 | No | No | Low |
| Blown cellulose | R-3.5 to R-3.8 | Yes (dense-pack) | No | Low-Medium |
| Spray foam (closed-cell) | R-6.0 to R-6.5 | Yes | Yes | High |
| Spray foam (open-cell) | R-3.6 to R-3.7 | Yes | No | Medium |
| XPS rigid board | R-5.0 | No | Yes | Medium |
| EPS rigid board | R-3.8 to R-4.2 | No | No | Low-Medium |
| Mineral wool board | R-4.0 to R-4.3 | No | No | Medium |
| Polyisocyanurate | R-5.7 to R-6.5* | No | Yes | Medium-High |

_* Polyiso R-value decreases significantly in cold temperatures, making it less suitable for Ontario exterior applications in winter._

## Detailed Breakdown

### Fibreglass Batts

The most common insulation in Canadian homes. Inexpensive, non-combustible, and easy to install in accessible cavities. Available in R-12 (3.5"), R-20 (5.5"), and R-24 (high-density 5.5") configurations.

> **Key Limitation:** Fibreglass does not stop air movement. It must always be combined with a separate air barrier. Gaps and compression drastically reduce performance.
### Blown Cellulose

Recycled paper fibre treated with borate for fire and pest resistance. Fills irregular cavities completely with no gaps, making it excellent for retrofits and attics. Dense-packed cellulose also provides meaningful air-sealing.

### Closed-Cell Spray Foam

The highest R-value per inch of any common insulation (R-6.0 to R-6.5). Acts as insulation, air barrier, and vapour barrier simultaneously. Ideal for rim joists, below-grade walls, and cathedral ceilings.

> **Cost Reality:** Closed-cell spray foam costs 3 to 5 times more than fibreglass or cellulose per R-value. It requires professional installation, occupant absence during application, and must be covered with drywall as a thermal barrier per code.
### Rigid Board Options

- **XPS (pink/blue):** R-5.0/inch, excellent moisture resistance, standard for below-grade. Higher environmental impact from blowing agents.
- **EPS (white beaded):** R-3.8 to R-4.2/inch, lower cost and environmental impact than XPS, acceptable moisture resistance.
- **Mineral wool (Rockwool):** R-4.0 to R-4.3/inch, non-combustible, vapour-open, excellent fire resistance. Increasingly popular for continuous exterior insulation.

## Where to Insulate: Ontario Code Minimums

| Location | Code Minimum | Best Practice | Recommended Product |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Attic | R-60 | R-80 | Blown cellulose or fibreglass |
| Above-grade walls | R-24 cavity + continuous | R-24 + R-10 exterior | Batts + mineral wool board |
| Below-grade walls | R-20 | R-24 | Exterior XPS/EPS or interior spray foam |
| Rim joist | R-20 | R-24 | Closed-cell spray foam |
| Under slab | R-10 | R-14 | EPS or XPS rigid board |

---

## Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. **Compressing fibreglass batts** into smaller cavities (destroys R-value)
2. **Leaving gaps** around electrical boxes, pipes, and penetrations
3. **Vapour barrier on the wrong side** (in Ontario, it goes on the warm side: the interior)
4. **Using polyiso on cold exteriors** without accounting for cold-temperature R-value loss
5. **Insulating without air-sealing** (air leakage carries far more heat than conduction through insulation)

> **AVANORTH Principle:** We always address air sealing before or alongside insulation. The best insulation in the world cannot perform if air bypasses it through gaps and cracks. Every system we specify is matched to the application, climate zone, and budget.
