# **Concrete Finishing Techniques: From Broom to Polished**

The finish on a concrete surface determines its appearance, texture, slip resistance, and durability. From rough broom finishes to mirror-smooth polished floors, each technique serves a purpose.

## More Than Just "Smooth"

Concrete finishing is the process of treating the surface of freshly placed concrete to achieve the desired appearance, texture, and performance. The finish selected for a concrete surface depends on its intended use: a warehouse floor, a residential basement, an exterior walkway, and a decorative feature wall each require different finishing techniques.

## Screeding and Bull Floating

Every concrete finish begins with screeding: dragging a straight board or vibrating screed across the surface of freshly placed concrete to establish a flat, level surface at the correct elevation. After screeding, bull floating (running a wide, flat tool across the surface) closes the surface, fills voids, and pushes coarse aggregate below the surface in preparation for subsequent finishing operations.

## Broom Finish

The most common exterior concrete finish. After the concrete has been floated and any bleed water has evaporated, a stiff-bristled broom is dragged across the surface in straight, parallel strokes. This creates a textured surface with small ridges that provide excellent slip resistance when wet.

Broom finish is the standard for:

- Exterior sidewalks and walkways
- Driveways and parking areas
- Patios and pool decks
- Loading docks and ramps

The depth and character of the broom texture can be varied by adjusting the bristle stiffness, timing (earlier brooming in softer concrete creates deeper texture), and broom direction.

## Trowel Finish (Steel Trowel)

A smooth, dense surface produced by working the surface with a steel trowel (hand trowel or power trowel). The troweling operation compresses and densifies the concrete surface, closing pores and creating a hard, smooth finish. Multiple troweling passes at progressively later times (as the concrete stiffens) produce an increasingly smooth and hard surface.

Trowel finish levels:

- **Flat trowel finish:** A smooth but not burnished surface. Suitable for interior floors that will receive a floor covering (tile, carpet, vinyl).
- **Hard trowel finish:** A denser, smoother surface produced by additional late troweling passes. Suitable for industrial floors, warehouses, and retail spaces where the concrete is the finished floor.
- **Burnished finish:** The smoothest trowel finish, produced by extensive late troweling at high speed with the trowel blade at a steep angle. The surface is dense, hard, and slightly reflective. This finish is slippery when wet and is not suitable for exterior use.

## Exposed Aggregate

A decorative finish that reveals the coarse aggregate (stones) within the concrete. After placing and screeding, the surface is lightly floated, then a surface retarder is applied. This chemical slows cement hydration at the surface while the concrete below sets normally. After the concrete has achieved initial set, the surface paste is washed away with water and light brushing, exposing the aggregate.

The visual character of exposed aggregate depends on the aggregate selected: river stone, granite, limestone, or coloured glass can all be used. Exposed aggregate provides good slip resistance and is popular for:

- Residential driveways and walkways
- Pool surrounds
- Decorative plazas and courtyards

## Stamped Concrete

A decorative technique where patterns and textures are pressed into freshly placed concrete using rubber stamps. The concrete is typically coloured with an integral colour or surface-applied colour hardener, then stamped to replicate the appearance of stone, brick, slate, tile, or wood.

Stamped concrete is popular for patios, walkways, driveways, and pool decks. It provides the look of natural materials at a lower cost. Proper technique includes uniform colour application, precise stamp alignment, and a quality sealer to protect the surface and enhance colour.

## Polished Concrete

A multi-step grinding and polishing process applied to hardened concrete. Diamond-impregnated abrasive pads progressively grind the surface from coarse (30 to 50 grit) through fine (800 to 3000 grit), producing a smooth, reflective surface. A chemical densifier (lithium silicate) is applied during the process to harden the surface and seal pores.

Polished concrete is increasingly popular for:

- Retail floors
- Restaurant and cafe floors
- Residential main-floor areas
- Showrooms and galleries

Advantages: durable, easy to maintain (dust mop and occasional damp mop), reflective surface improves lighting efficiency, and no coatings or coverings to replace.

At AVANORTH, we specify concrete finishes based on the function and design intent of each surface. Our finishing crews are experienced in the full range of techniques, from basic broom finishes for utility sidewalks to decorative exposed aggregate and polished floors for high-visibility applications.
