# **Courtyards and Atriums: Bringing the Outdoors Into Modern Design**

Courtyards and atriums create sheltered outdoor or semi-outdoor spaces within buildings. These features improve natural light, air circulation, and occupant wellbeing.

## An Ancient Idea for Modern Buildings

The courtyard is one of the oldest architectural elements in human history. From Roman domus to Moroccan riads to Japanese machiya, cultures around the world have used enclosed or semi-enclosed outdoor spaces as the organizing heart of buildings. In modern Canadian construction, courtyards and atriums serve the same fundamental purposes they always have: bringing daylight into the interior, providing protected outdoor space, and creating a visual and spatial connection to the natural world.

## Courtyards in Residential Design

A courtyard home places an outdoor space in the centre or side of the floor plan, surrounded by the building on two, three, or four sides. This configuration offers several advantages in Canadian residential construction:

- **Wind protection:** The surrounding walls shield the courtyard from prevailing winds, creating a microclimate that is warmer and calmer than fully exposed outdoor spaces. In Ontario, this can extend the usable outdoor season by several weeks in spring and fall.
- **Privacy:** A courtyard surrounded by the home's walls provides private outdoor space without relying on fencing. This is especially valuable on smaller urban lots where neighbours are close.
- **Natural light penetration:** Rooms surrounding the courtyard receive light from two directions instead of one, reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating more pleasant interior spaces.
- **Ventilation:** An operable courtyard (with windows and doors that open to it) enables cross-ventilation through the home, cooling the interior without mechanical systems on mild days.

Design considerations for Canadian courtyards include snow management (where does the snow go, and how does meltwater drain?), thermal bridging at the wall-to-courtyard junctions, and glazing performance on the courtyard-facing walls (these windows are protected from wind but still need to perform thermally).

## Atriums in Commercial and Multi-Residential Buildings

An atrium is an enclosed interior space that rises through multiple floors, typically topped with a skylight or glazed roof. Atriums are common in commercial, institutional, and multi-residential buildings. Their functions include:

- **Daylighting deep floor plates:** In large commercial buildings, the centre of the floor plate can be far from any exterior window. An atrium brings daylight into the core of the building, reducing artificial lighting energy use and improving occupant satisfaction.
- **Stack-effect ventilation:** Warm air rises naturally through the atrium and exits at the top. Cooler replacement air enters at the base. This natural stack effect can assist with building ventilation and reduce HVAC energy consumption, particularly in mild weather.
- **Wayfinding and orientation:** An atrium provides a visual reference point within the building. Occupants can orient themselves by looking up or down into the central space. This improves navigation and creates a sense of openness and transparency.
- **Community space:** In multi-residential buildings, ground-floor atrium spaces often serve as lobbies, lounges, or community gathering areas that feel bright and inviting.

## Fire Code Considerations for Atriums

The Ontario Building Code treats atriums as interconnected floor spaces, which has significant fire code implications:

- Smoke management systems (mechanical exhaust, pressurization, or combinations) are typically required to prevent smoke from spreading through the atrium to connected floors.
- Automatic sprinkler protection is required throughout the building.
- Glazing separating the atrium from occupied floor areas may need to be fire-rated or protected by a dedicated sprinkler system (draft curtains and closely spaced sprinklers).
- Means of egress must not depend on passing through the atrium space.

These requirements add cost and complexity, so atriums should be designed with fire protection engineers involved from the concept stage.

## Balancing Ambition with Performance

Large glazed atriums and courtyards are visually striking, but they must perform in Canada's climate. Key performance considerations:

- Solar heat gain through atrium glazing can cause overheating in summer. Operable vents or shading devices may be needed.
- Heat loss through atrium glazing in winter must be accounted for in the energy model.
- Condensation on cold atrium glazing surfaces in winter can cause water damage. High-performance glazing units and frame systems with thermal breaks are essential.

At AVANORTH, we design courtyard and atrium spaces that enhance the buildings they serve. We balance the architectural ambition of these features with the practical realities of Canadian climate, building codes, and long-term performance.
