# **Embodied Carbon in Construction Materials: Measuring and Reducing**

Embodied carbon is the CO2 emitted during material extraction, manufacturing, transport, and construction. As buildings become more energy-efficient, embodied carbon becomes the dominant source of lifecycle emissions.

Every construction material carries a carbon footprint before it is ever installed in a building. The steel was mined as iron ore, smelted in a blast furnace at 1,500 degrees C, and shipped across the country. The concrete required cement, which was manufactured by heating limestone to 1,450 degrees C in a kiln that releases CO2 both from fuel combustion and from the chemical process itself. The insulation was produced from petrochemicals or mined minerals. Even wood, the most carbon-friendly structural material, required harvesting, milling, kiln-drying, and transport. This "embodied carbon" represents all the greenhouse gas emissions associated with a material's lifecycle, from cradle (raw material extraction) to construction site gate, and potentially through demolition and disposal.

## Why Embodied Carbon Matters Now

> **The Carbon Shift:** As buildings become more energy-efficient (better insulation, heat pumps, solar panels, clean electricity grid), the operational carbon (emissions from heating, cooling, and lighting the building over its life) decreases dramatically. In a net-zero energy building, operational carbon approaches zero. This means embodied carbon, which was historically 10-20% of a building's lifecycle emissions, now represents 50-80% of total lifecycle emissions for high-performance buildings. For a typical new Ontario house built to 2026 code, embodied carbon is approximately 40-50% of the 50-year lifecycle carbon.

## Embodied Carbon of Common Materials

| Material | kgCO2e per kg | kgCO2e per m3 (typical) | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Concrete (25 MPa) | 0.12-0.16 | 280-380 | 70-90% of the carbon is from cement |
| Steel (structural) | 1.5-2.5 | 12,000-20,000 | Recycled steel (EAF) is 0.4-0.8 kgCO2e/kg |
| Aluminum | 8-12 | 22,000-33,000 | Very energy-intensive; recycled aluminum is 0.5-1.0 |
| Softwood lumber | -1.0 to 0.3 | -500 to 150 | Negative = sequestered carbon exceeds production emissions |
| CLT (cross-laminated timber) | -0.7 to 0.5 | -350 to 250 | Depends on adhesive type and energy source |
| Brick (clay) | 0.2-0.4 | 350-700 | High firing temperature |
| Gypsum board | 0.15-0.25 | 100-175 | Moderate production energy |
| XPS insulation | 3.5-5.0 | 110-160 | High-GWP blowing agents (being phased out) |
| EPS insulation | 2.5-3.5 | 40-55 | Lower than XPS |
| Mineral wool insulation | 1.0-1.5 | 30-50 | Non-combustible |

## Strategies to Reduce Embodied Carbon

### 1. Material Selection

- **Use wood where possible:** Wood sequesters carbon. A wood-frame building stores roughly 1 tonne of CO2 per cubic metre of lumber used, offsetting the production emissions. CLT and mass timber are expanding wood's use into mid-rise and commercial buildings.
- **Low-carbon concrete:** Specify supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) like fly ash, slag, or calcined clay to replace 30-50% of Portland cement. This reduces concrete carbon by 25-40%.
- **Recycled steel:** Specify electric arc furnace (EAF) steel made from recycled scrap. Its embodied carbon is 60-75% lower than virgin blast furnace steel.

### 2. Design Optimization

- **Right-sizing structure:** Eliminate over-design. Structural optimization (using the right amount of material for the actual loads) can reduce material use by 15-30%.
- **Efficient floor plans:** Compact building shapes minimize the ratio of exterior envelope to floor area, reducing both material use and operational energy.
- **Design for disassembly:** Mechanical connections (bolts) instead of chemical bonds (adhesives, welds) allow materials to be reused at end of life.

### 3. Whole-Life Carbon Assessment

| Lifecycle Stage | What It Includes | EN 15978 Module |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Product stage | Raw material extraction, transport to factory, manufacturing | A1-A3 (most commonly reported) |
| Construction | Transport to site, on-site construction energy | A4-A5 |
| Use stage | Maintenance, repair, replacement, operational energy/water | B1-B7 |
| End of life | Demolition, transport, waste processing, disposal | C1-C4 |
| Beyond lifecycle | Reuse, recycling, energy recovery benefits | D |

> **AVANORTH Approach:** We track embodied carbon on our projects using Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and lifecycle assessment tools. Our standard specifications include low-carbon concrete (30%+ SCM replacement), sustainably sourced Canadian lumber, and recycled-content steel where available. We believe embodied carbon will become a regulated metric within the next decade, and we are preparing our supply chain and design practices now.
