# **Heat Pump Technology: Efficient Heating and Cooling**

Heat pumps move heat rather than generating it, delivering 2-4 times more energy than they consume. Modern cold-climate heat pumps now operate efficiently even at -25 degrees C, making them viable for Ontario.

Heat pumps are the most energy-efficient heating and cooling technology available today. Unlike a furnace that burns fuel to create heat, a heat pump moves existing heat from one place to another. In winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air (or the ground) and moves it inside. In summer, it reverses and moves heat from inside to outside, functioning as an air conditioner. Because moving heat requires much less energy than creating it, heat pumps deliver 2-4 units of heat energy for every 1 unit of electrical energy consumed.

## How Heat Pumps Work

A heat pump uses the same refrigeration cycle as an air conditioner or refrigerator:

1. **Evaporator (outdoor coil in heating mode):** Liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the outdoor air and evaporates into a gas, even when outdoor temperatures are below freezing
2. **Compressor:** The gas is compressed, raising its temperature significantly (the key energy input)
3. **Condenser (indoor coil in heating mode):** The hot, high-pressure gas releases its heat into the indoor air and condenses back to liquid
4. **Expansion valve:** The liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, dropping in pressure and temperature, and the cycle repeats

## Types of Heat Pumps

| Type | Heat Source | Installed Cost | COP Range | Best For |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Air-source (ducted) | Outdoor air | $8,000-15,000 | COP 2.0-3.5 | Homes with existing ductwork |
| Air-source (ductless mini-split) | Outdoor air | $4,000-8,000 per zone | COP 2.5-4.0 | Additions, homes without ducts, zone heating |
| Ground-source (geothermal) | Ground (via buried loop) | $25,000-45,000 | COP 3.5-5.0 | New construction, large homes, commercial |
| Air-to-water | Outdoor air | $12,000-25,000 | COP 2.5-3.5 | Hydronic heating (radiant floor, baseboard) |

## Cold-Climate Performance

### The -25 degrees C Breakthrough

The biggest concern with air-source heat pumps in Canada has historically been cold-weather performance. Older heat pumps lost most of their capacity below -10 degrees C. Modern cold-climate heat pumps (ccASHP) have solved this problem:

| Outdoor Temperature | COP (modern ccASHP) | Capacity Retained |
| --- | --- | --- |
| +10 degrees C | 4.0-5.0 | 100% |
| 0 degrees C | 3.0-4.0 | 85-95% |
| -10 degrees C | 2.5-3.0 | 75-85% |
| -15 degrees C | 2.0-2.5 | 65-75% |
| -25 degrees C | 1.5-2.0 | 50-60% |
| Below -25 degrees C | Backup heat needed | Below rated capacity |

> **Key Insight:** Even at -25 degrees C with a COP of 1.8, the heat pump is delivering 80% more heat than the electricity it consumes. It is still more efficient than electric baseboard heating (COP 1.0). The only question is whether the heat pump can supply enough capacity at extreme cold, or whether supplemental (backup) heating is needed for the coldest hours. In Ontario, a properly sized cold-climate heat pump with a gas or electric backup for the coldest days (typically only 50-100 hours/year below -20 degrees C) is the most cost-effective and lowest-carbon heating strategy.

## Cost and Savings

### Operating Cost Comparison (Ontario, 2,000 sq ft home)

| Heating System | Annual Heating Cost (est.) | Annual CO2 (tonnes) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Natural gas furnace (96% AFUE) | $1,400-1,800 | 3.5-4.5 |
| Oil furnace (85% AFUE) | $2,500-3,500 | 5.0-7.0 |
| Electric baseboard (COP 1.0) | $2,800-3,500 | 0.3-0.5 (Ontario's clean grid) |
| Air-source heat pump (COP 2.5 seasonal avg) | $1,100-1,500 | 0.15-0.25 |
| Ground-source heat pump (COP 3.5 seasonal avg) | $800-1,100 | 0.10-0.15 |

### Available Incentives

- **Canada Greener Homes Grant:** Up to $5,000 for a heat pump installation
- **Enbridge Home Efficiency Rebate:** $2,000-3,000 for qualifying heat pumps
- **Canada Greener Homes Loan:** Interest-free loan up to $40,000 for energy-efficient upgrades

> **AVANORTH Heat Pumps:** We specify cold-climate heat pumps as our standard heating/cooling system in new construction. For our net-zero and near-net-zero homes, the heat pump is the cornerstone of the mechanical system. Combined with a well-insulated, airtight building envelope, a modestly sized heat pump provides all the heating, cooling, and dehumidification the home needs. We also install heat pumps in retrofit projects, coordinating with the existing heating system for backup during extreme cold.
