# **How Proper Curing Transforms Concrete Strength**

Curing is the single most important step after placing concrete. Learn why moisture retention and temperature control determine whether your slab reaches its full potential.

## What Is Concrete Curing and Why Does It Matter?

Concrete does not simply dry to become hard. It undergoes a chemical reaction called hydration, where water reacts with cement particles to form calcium silicate hydrate crystals. These crystals bind the aggregate together and create the strength we rely on. Proper curing ensures that enough moisture remains in the mix for hydration to continue over days and weeks.

Without adequate curing, the surface dries too quickly, hydration stops prematurely, and the concrete never reaches its design strength. In fact, poorly cured concrete can lose up to 50 percent of its potential compressive strength. That is a risk no builder should accept.

## The First 7 Days Are Critical

Concrete gains strength rapidly during its first week. Under ideal conditions, it can reach about 70 percent of its 28-day design strength within just seven days. But this only happens if moisture and temperature are properly controlled during that window.

The Canadian standards (CSA A23.1) recommend maintaining concrete at a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius and keeping surfaces moist for at least seven days for normal structural applications. For high-performance mixes, the curing period may extend to 14 days or more.

## Common Curing Methods

### Water Curing

This is the most effective method. It involves keeping the concrete surface continuously wet using sprinklers, soaker hoses, or wet burlap. Water curing provides an unlimited supply of moisture for hydration and is ideal for slabs, pavements, and flatwork.

### Curing Compounds

Liquid membrane-forming curing compounds are sprayed onto the concrete surface immediately after finishing. They create a thin film that reduces moisture evaporation. This method is practical for large areas where water curing is not feasible. Most compounds conform to ASTM C309 standards.

### Plastic Sheet Covering

Clear or white polyethylene sheets can be placed over fresh concrete to trap moisture. This is a simple and cost-effective approach, though care must be taken to seal the edges properly. The sheets should be laid flat against the surface to prevent discoloration from condensation.

### Insulated Blankets

In cold weather, insulated curing blankets serve a dual purpose. They retain moisture and also maintain temperature. This is especially important during Canadian winters, where both moisture loss and freezing are concerns.

## Temperature and Its Effect on Strength Gain

Higher temperatures accelerate hydration, while lower temperatures slow it down. However, excessively high temperatures can lead to rapid moisture loss and thermal cracking. The ideal curing temperature range is between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius.

During hot summer pours in Ontario, consider using chilled water in the mix and applying curing compounds immediately. During winter, heated enclosures and insulated blankets keep the hydration process moving forward at a steady pace.

## Signs of Poor Curing

- Surface crazing or map cracking (fine surface cracks in a pattern)
- Dusty or chalky surface that powders when rubbed
- Lower-than-expected compressive test results at 28 days
- Surface scaling after exposure to freeze-thaw cycles

If you notice these signs, the concrete may have been inadequately cured. While surface treatments can sometimes improve appearance, the lost internal strength cannot be recovered.

## Best Practices for Curing Success

- Begin curing as soon as the concrete surface can support it without damage, typically within 20 to 30 minutes after finishing.
- Maintain moisture continuously. Gaps in water curing can cause differential shrinkage and cracking.
- Use wind breaks on exposed sites to reduce evaporation rates.
- For vertical elements like walls and columns, apply curing compound immediately after form removal.
- Document curing duration and methods in your quality records for every pour.

## Curing Is Not Optional

At AVANORTH, we treat curing as a non-negotiable part of every concrete placement. It is the difference between a structure that meets its 30-year design life and one that starts deteriorating in its first decade. Investing time and resources in proper curing pays dividends in durability, crack resistance, and client confidence.
