## Green Infrastructure in Modern Cities

As urban density increases across Canadian cities, the challenge of maintaining connection to the natural world becomes more pressing. Living walls, also known as vertical gardens, and green roofs offer practical solutions to this challenge while delivering measurable environmental, economic, and health benefits.

Toronto's Green Roof Bylaw, enacted in 2009, was one of the first in North America to require green roofs on new developments above a certain size. Since then, the city has seen hundreds of green roof installations ranging from simple extensive systems to elaborate rooftop gardens.

## Understanding Green Roof Systems

Green roofs fall into two main categories:

- **Extensive green roofs:** Lightweight systems with a shallow growing medium (50 to 150 mm deep). They support drought-tolerant plants like sedums and require minimal maintenance. Ideal for large commercial roofs where accessibility is limited.
- **Intensive green roofs:** Deeper soil profiles (200 mm or more) that can support a wider range of plants, including shrubs, perennials, and even small trees. These function more like traditional gardens but require regular maintenance, irrigation, and stronger structural support.

Both types require a layered assembly: waterproof root barrier, drainage layer, filter fabric, growing medium, and vegetation.

## Living Wall Technology

Living walls are vertical systems that support plant growth on building facades or interior surfaces. There are several approaches:

- **Panel systems:** Pre-vegetated panels are mounted to a frame attached to the building wall. Each panel contains growing medium and plants. They can be installed quickly and replaced modularly.
- **Tray systems:** Individual planting trays are stacked vertically on a support structure. Each tray has its own growing medium and drainage.
- **Felt pocket systems:** Layers of felt material with pockets for individual plants. Water and nutrients are delivered through a drip irrigation system. This is the technology behind many of the dramatic living walls you see in commercial lobbies.

## Environmental Benefits

The environmental case for green infrastructure is well documented:

- **Stormwater management:** Green roofs can retain 50 to 80 percent of rainfall, reducing stormwater runoff and easing the load on municipal drainage systems.
- **Urban heat island reduction:** Vegetated surfaces cool the surrounding air through evapotranspiration. Studies show green roofs can reduce rooftop surface temperatures by 30 to 40 degrees Celsius compared to conventional dark roofs.
- **Air quality improvement:** Plants absorb CO2, particulate matter, and other pollutants. A single extensive green roof can process the equivalent of several trees worth of air filtration.
- **Biodiversity support:** Green roofs and walls provide habitat for pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects in otherwise sterile urban environments.

## Economic Value

Beyond environmental benefits, green infrastructure delivers tangible economic returns:

- Extended roof membrane lifespan (green roofs protect the waterproofing from UV and thermal cycling, potentially doubling its service life)
- Energy savings from improved insulation (reduced heating in winter and cooling in summer)
- Increased property values and marketability
- Stormwater fee reductions in municipalities that offer credits for on-site retention
- LEED and other green certification points

## Construction Considerations

Installing green roofs and living walls requires careful engineering:

- Structural capacity must accommodate the saturated weight of the green roof assembly, which ranges from 70 kg per square metre for extensive systems to over 400 kg per square metre for intensive systems
- Waterproofing must be robust and tested for root penetration resistance
- Drainage design must prevent water ponding while retaining enough moisture for plant growth
- Irrigation systems are essential for living walls and intensive green roofs
- Maintenance access must be designed into the system from the start

At AVANORTH, we see green roofs and living walls as practical building technologies that enhance both the performance and the experience of the spaces we build. When the project and budget allow, we recommend these systems as part of a thoughtful approach to durable, responsible construction.
