# **Low-Carbon Concrete: Reducing Cement's Carbon Footprint**

Cement production accounts for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions. New low-carbon concrete technologies and supplementary cementitious materials are dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of the world's most-used building material.

Concrete is the second most consumed substance on Earth after water. Approximately 4.4 billion tonnes of cement are produced globally each year, and each tonne of cement releases approximately 0.6-0.9 tonnes of CO2 during manufacturing. This makes cement production responsible for roughly 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions. If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter after China and the United States. Reducing the carbon intensity of concrete is one of the most impactful steps the construction industry can take to address climate change.

## Where Does the Carbon Come From?

| Source | % of Cement CO2 | Mechanism |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Calcination | 60% | Heating limestone (CaCO3) to 1,450 degrees C drives off CO2 as a chemical reaction product. This is an inherent chemical emission, not a fuel emission. |
| Kiln fuel | 30% | Burning fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, petroleum coke) to heat the kiln to 1,450 degrees C |
| Electricity + transport | 10% | Grinding raw materials, operating auxiliary equipment, transporting materials |

> **Key Challenge:** Because 60% of cement's emissions come from the chemical decomposition of limestone (not fuel burning), you cannot eliminate cement's carbon footprint simply by switching to renewable energy. Reducing calcination emissions requires reducing the amount of clinker (the calcium compound) in the cement, or capturing the CO2 before it enters the atmosphere.

## Strategies for Low-Carbon Concrete

### 1. Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs)

SCMs replace a portion of the Portland cement in a concrete mix with materials that have cementitious properties but much lower (or zero) carbon footprints:

| SCM | Source | Typical Replacement Rate | CO2 Reduction |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Fly ash (Class F) | Coal power plant byproduct | 15-35% | 15-35% |
| Slag (GGBFS) | Steel blast furnace byproduct | 25-70% | 25-70% |
| Silica fume | Silicon/ferrosilicon manufacturing byproduct | 5-10% | 5-10% |
| Natural pozzolans | Volcanic ash, calcined clay | 15-35% | 15-35% |
| Limestone filler | Finely ground limestone | 5-15% | 5-15% |

### 2. Mix Design Optimization

- **Lower cement content:** Many concrete mixes use more cement than structurally necessary. Optimizing the mix (better aggregate gradation, water reducers, proper consolidation) can achieve the same strength with 10-20% less cement.
- **Performance-based specifications:** Instead of specifying a minimum cement content, specify the required performance (strength, durability, permeability). Let the concrete producer optimize the mix.

### 3. Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU)

1. **CO2 curing:** Companies like CarbonCure inject captured CO2 into fresh concrete during mixing. The CO2 mineralizes into calcium carbonate nanoparticles that strengthen the concrete while permanently sequestering the CO2. Net reduction: approximately 5-8% of the concrete's emissions.
2. **Carbon capture at the kiln:** Point-source carbon capture systems installed at cement kilns can capture 90%+ of the CO2 before it enters the atmosphere. Several pilot plants are in operation globally.

### 4. Alternative Cements

- **LC3 (Limestone Calcined Clay Cement):** Replaces up to 50% of clinker with a combination of calcined clay and limestone. 30-40% CO2 reduction. Uses widely available raw materials. Multiple pilot plants operating.
- **Geopolymer cement:** Made from industrial waste products (fly ash, slag) activated by an alkaline solution. Near-zero clinker content. 60-80% CO2 reduction. Limited commercial availability.

## Canadian Context

Canada is a leader in low-carbon concrete adoption:

- **Federal carbon pricing:** The carbon tax makes low-carbon concrete increasingly cost-competitive
- **Buy Clean policies:** Federal procurement policies favour low-carbon materials
- **CarbonCure:** A Halifax-based company whose CO2 injection technology is now used in over 700 concrete plants worldwide
- **CSA A23.1:** Canada's concrete standard allows high levels of SCM use and performance-based specifications

> **AVANORTH Low-Carbon Concrete:** We specify low-carbon concrete on all our projects where available. This typically means concrete with high SCM replacement (30-50% slag or fly ash) and CarbonCure treatment. On our commercial projects, we publish the embodied carbon of our concrete as part of our sustainability reporting. Specifying low-carbon concrete usually costs the same or only 1-3% more than conventional concrete, making it one of the easiest and most impactful sustainability decisions a builder can make.
