The outdoor living trend, accelerated by the pandemic when people needed more usable space, has matured into a permanent shift in how Canadians use their homes. Outdoor spaces are no longer just decks with a barbecue; they are fully designed rooms without walls, featuring kitchens, fireplaces, comfortable seating, lighting, audio, and even heating systems that extend the outdoor season well into fall and begin it early in spring. In 2026, the focus is on creating outdoor spaces that are comfortable, functional, and beautiful for as many months as possible.

## Top Design Trends for 2026

### 1. Covered Outdoor Rooms

A roof or pergola overhead transforms an outdoor space from weather-dependent to weather-resistant:

| Structure Type | Description | Cost Range |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Open pergola | Beams and rafters without solid roof. Provides partial shade. Can add retractable canopy or climbing vines. | $5,000-15,000 |
| Louvered pergola | Motorized aluminum louvers that open for sun or close for rain protection. Integrated LED lighting and drainage. | $15,000-40,000 |
| Solid roof extension | Structural roof extension of the house, matching the home's roofline. Full rain and snow protection. | $20,000-60,000+ |
| Screened room | Covered structure with screens on all sides. Bug-free outdoor living. Can include electric heaters for three-season use. | $15,000-35,000 |

### 2. Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor kitchens have evolved far beyond a built-in barbecue:

- **Full kitchens:** Built-in grill, side burner, refrigerator, sink, countertop workspace, and sometimes a pizza oven or smoker
- **Materials:** Stainless steel appliances, natural stone or porcelain countertops, stone or masonry base cabinets. All materials must be weather-resistant.
- **Utilities:** Natural gas line (for grill and burner), water supply and drain (for sink), electrical (for refrigerator, lighting, outlets)
- **Cost:** $10,000-50,000+ depending on size and equipment

### 3. Fire Features

| Feature | Fuel | Pros | Cons |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Gas fire pit (built-in) | Natural gas or propane | Instant on/off, no smoke, no ash, consistent flame | Less authentic feel, gas line required |
| Wood-burning fire pit | Firewood | Authentic experience, crackling sound, radiant heat | Smoke (check municipal bylaws), ash cleanup, spark risk |
| Gas fireplace (outdoor) | Natural gas | Architectural focal point, no smoke, safe near structures | Higher cost, gas line required |
| Electric fire feature | Electricity | No open flame, safe for covered spaces, LED effects | Less heat output, less authentic |

### 4. Hardscaping

- **Natural stone:** Flagstone, limestone, and granite remain the premium choice for patios, with natural variation in colour and texture
- **Porcelain pavers:** Growing rapidly. Available in wood-look, stone-look, and concrete-look finishes. Frost-resistant, stain-resistant, consistent appearance, low maintenance.
- **Concrete pavers:** The workhorse of residential hardscaping. Available in hundreds of colours, shapes, and textures. Interlocking pavers are durable and easy to repair.

## Extending the Season

1. **Infrared heaters:** Wall or ceiling-mounted electric infrared heaters provide targeted warmth without heating the air. Effective even in wind.
2. **Heated floors:** Electric radiant heating under outdoor porcelain or stone patios keeps the surface warm and snow-free
3. **Wind screens:** Tempered glass panels on windward sides block cold wind while maintaining views
4. **Hot tubs:** A perennial Canadian favourite. Year-round use even in winter.

## Landscaping Integration

> **Design Principle:** The most successful outdoor living spaces feel like a natural extension of both the house and the garden. Hard lines between the patio and the landscape are softened with planting beds, built-in planters, and ornamental trees. The transition from indoor to outdoor is seamless: the patio floor level should match or be within one step of the interior floor level, and the door opening should be as wide as possible (sliding or folding patio doors).
> **AVANORTH Outdoor Living:** We design and build outdoor living spaces as part of the overall home design, not as afterthoughts. Structural provisions for a future covered patio, gas line rough-ins for a fire feature or outdoor kitchen, electrical conduit for lighting and outlets, and water supply and drain for a sink are all incorporated during new construction at a fraction of the cost of adding them later. Our masonry team builds beautiful stone patios, outdoor fireplaces, and kitchen bases, and we coordinate with landscape designers for a complete outdoor experience.
