# **Rebar Placement and Inspection for Quality Concrete Structures**

Reinforcing steel (rebar) provides the tensile strength that concrete lacks. Proper placement, coverage, lapping, and inspection are critical to the structural integrity and longevity of any reinforced concrete element.

Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension. Reinforcing steel (rebar) is embedded in concrete to provide the tensile strength needed to resist bending, shear, and thermal forces. The effectiveness of reinforcement depends entirely on correct placement. Rebar in the wrong position, with insufficient cover, or with improper lap splices will not perform as designed. The result can be cracking, corrosion, and premature structural failure.

## Common Rebar Sizes Used in Canada

| Metric Size | Imperial Equiv. | Diameter (mm) | Area (mm2) | Weight (kg/m) | Typical Use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 10M | #3 | 11.3 | 100 | 0.785 | Slabs, ties, stirrups |
| 15M | #5 | 16.0 | 200 | 1.570 | Walls, slabs, beams |
| 20M | #6 | 19.5 | 300 | 2.355 | Beams, columns, foundations |
| 25M | #8 | 25.2 | 500 | 3.925 | Heavy beams, columns, piles |
| 30M | #10 | 29.9 | 700 | 5.495 | Large columns, foundations |
| 35M | #11 | 35.7 | 1000 | 7.850 | Heavy structural elements |

## Concrete Cover Requirements

Cover is the distance from the nearest surface of the rebar to the face of the concrete. Adequate cover protects the steel from corrosion and fire, and provides the bond needed to transfer forces between the steel and concrete.

| Exposure Condition | Minimum Cover (CSA A23.1) |
| --- | --- |
| Cast against earth (no forms) | 75 mm |
| Exposed to earth or weather (formed) | 50-60 mm |
| Exposed to de-icing chemicals | 60-70 mm |
| Interior (not exposed to weather) | 20-40 mm |
| Slabs and walls (interior) | 20 mm |
| Beams and columns (interior) | 30-40 mm |

> **Cover is Not Optional:** Every millimetre of cover matters. Reducing cover by 10 mm can cut the corrosion protection life in half. In Canada's freeze-thaw climate with de-icing salts, maintaining specified cover is the single most important factor in the long-term durability of reinforced concrete.

## Lap Splices

When rebar must be joined (because standard bar lengths are typically 6-12 m), the most common method is the lap splice: overlapping two bars side by side for a specified length.

### Minimum Lap Splice Length

- **Tension lap (Class B):** Typically 1.3 x development length. For 20M bar in 25 MPa concrete: approximately 900 mm.
- **Compression lap:** Shorter than tension. For 20M bar: approximately 600 mm.
- **Stagger requirement:** Not all splices should occur at the same location. CSA A23.3 requires staggering splices to avoid creating a weakened section.

### Tie Wire

Rebar intersections are secured with 16-gauge or 18-gauge tie wire. Tie wire is not structural; it holds the rebar in position during concrete placement. Every intersection in the outer layer should be tied. Interior intersections can be tied alternately.

## Chairs and Supports

Rebar must be held in the correct position during concrete placement. Bar chairs (supports) come in various types:

| Chair Type | Material | Use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Individual high chair | Steel wire | Supporting top mat of slab rebar |
| Continuous high chair | Steel wire | Long runs of top mat support |
| Slab bolster | Steel wire | Supporting bottom mat on forms |
| Plastic-tipped chairs | Steel with plastic tips | Exposed concrete (prevents rust staining) |
| All-plastic chairs | Plastic | Corrosive environments, exposed concrete |
| Precast concrete blocks | Concrete | Heavy mats, cast against earth |

---

## Pre-Pour Inspection Checklist

Before any concrete is placed, the reinforcement must be inspected. The engineer or inspector verifies:

1. **Bar sizes:** Correct sizes per the structural drawings
2. **Bar spacing:** Correct spacing in both directions, measured centre-to-centre
3. **Cover:** Minimum cover maintained on all surfaces (check with a cover meter or tape measure)
4. **Lap splices:** Correct length, staggered as required, properly tied
5. **Bar position:** Top mat vs bottom mat in the correct position (tension face)
6. **Ties and chairs:** Adequate support to maintain position during pour
7. **Cleanliness:** No mud, oil, loose rust, or debris on the bars that would reduce bond
8. **Embedments:** Anchor bolts, sleeves, inserts, and conduits in correct position
9. **Clearance for concrete placement:** Adequate space between bars for concrete and vibrator to pass (minimum clear spacing = bar diameter or 25 mm, whichever is greater)

> **AVANORTH Standard:** We photograph every rebar placement before the pour and obtain written inspection approval from the engineer of record. No concrete is placed until the reinforcement has been inspected and approved. This is non-negotiable on every AVANORTH project.
