# **Smart Home Infrastructure: Wiring for Tomorrow**

The devices change every few years, but the wiring lasts decades. Smart builders install the infrastructure that future-proofs homes for whatever technology comes next.

## Infrastructure Over Gadgets

Smart home technology evolves rapidly. The smart thermostat, doorbell, and voice assistant of 2026 will likely be replaced by different devices within a decade. But the wiring, conduit, and network infrastructure that connects them changes slowly and is expensive to retrofit. The builder's role is not to install the latest gadgets (the homeowner can do that after move-in) but to install the physical infrastructure that makes any current or future smart home system possible.

## Structured Wiring

Structured wiring is the backbone of a smart home. It is a star topology: individual cables run from each room back to a central distribution panel (typically located in the mechanical room, a utility closet, or the basement). This panel is the hub where all communications, entertainment, and automation cables converge.

The minimum structured wiring package for a new home should include:

- **Category 6A ethernet cable:** At least two Cat 6A drops per room (living room, bedrooms, office, kitchen). Cat 6A supports 10 Gbps speeds and is adequate for any foreseeable residential application. Run cables to ceiling locations designated for wireless access points (one per floor for homes over 150 square metres).
- **Coaxial cable (RG6):** One RG6 drop to each media location (living room, primary bedroom). While streaming is replacing cable, coaxial is still used for antenna-based TV, some internet services, and CCTV cameras.
- **HDMI conduit:** Install 25 mm conduit between the media equipment closet and each TV location. HDMI standards change frequently, and pulling new HDMI cables through conduit is easy; fishing them through finished walls is not.

## Network Infrastructure

Wi-Fi alone is insufficient for reliable smart home performance. Wi-Fi is convenient for mobile devices but unreliable for fixed devices (smart TVs, security cameras, gaming consoles) that benefit from wired connections. A proper home network includes:

- **Central network rack or panel:** A small wall-mounted rack in the utility area housing the internet modem, network switch, router, and patch panel. Provide adequate ventilation and a dedicated 15-amp electrical circuit for network equipment.
- **Wired access points:** Wi-Fi access points connected to the network via ethernet cable (not mesh systems that repeat degraded wireless signals). Ceiling-mounted access points provide the best coverage. Plan one per floor or one per 90 to 120 square metres.
- **Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability:** Cat 6A cable can deliver both data and power to compatible devices (access points, security cameras, intercom panels) through a PoE-enabled network switch, eliminating the need for separate power outlets at these locations.

## Security and Surveillance

Pre-wire for a security camera system during construction:

- Cat 6A cable to each planned camera location (front door, rear door, garage, driveway, side yards). Run to exterior soffits or wall locations that provide the desired field of view.
- Cat 6A cable to the front door location for a wired video doorbell (battery units work but wired is more reliable)
- Cat 6A cable to alarm panel location and each door/window sensor location (for wired alarm systems; wireless sensors are an alternative but wired is more reliable for permanent installations)

## Electrical Provisions

Smart homes need more electrical capacity and specific outlet provisions:

- **USB-equipped outlets:** Install outlets with built-in USB-A and USB-C charging ports at nightstands, kitchen counters, home office locations, and mudroom charging stations.
- **Smart switch boxes:** Specify deeper electrical boxes (minimum 50 mm depth) at switch locations that may house smart switches. Standard shallow boxes do not accommodate the bulk of smart switch electronics. Ensure neutral wires are present at all switch locations (most smart switches require a neutral conductor).
- **Dedicated circuits:** Provide a dedicated 15-amp circuit for the network closet/rack. Provide 240V outlets in the garage for EV charging (Level 2, 40 to 50 amp circuit). Consider a dedicated circuit for a future home battery system.

## Automation-Ready Mechanical Systems

- HVAC system with communicating thermostat capability (most modern systems support this)
- Motorized dampers for zone control (if applicable)
- Conduit for future motorized window shade wiring at large windows
- Pre-wire for automated garage door opener with smart integration

At AVANORTH, our new homes include a structured wiring specification as standard. We install the physical infrastructure that homeowners need to adopt any smart home platform, now or in the future, without opening walls or running new cables.
