## Beyond Traditional Lumber

For generations, Canadian construction relied on dimensional lumber cut straight from logs. Two-by-fours, two-by-sixes, and two-by-tens were the backbone of residential framing. While these materials still dominate the market, engineered wood products (EWPs) are gaining ground for good reasons: they are stronger, straighter, more consistent, and often more sustainable than traditional sawn lumber.

## Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)

LVL is made by layering thin wood veneers with adhesive and pressing them together under heat. The result is a structural member that is remarkably strong and dimensionally stable. Key advantages:

- Available in much longer lengths than solid lumber (up to 24 metres)
- Higher allowable stresses than equivalent solid wood sizes
- Minimal warping, twisting, or shrinking
- Consistent quality regardless of natural wood variations
- Commonly used as beams, headers, and rim boards

LVL is the go-to product for long-span beams in residential construction. It carries heavier loads across wider openings than solid lumber can achieve.

## Glued-Laminated Timber (Glulam)

Glulam is manufactured by bonding layers of dimensional lumber together with structural adhesive. The resulting beams can be straight, curved, or tapered, making them architecturally versatile. Applications include:

- Ridge beams and purlins in residential and commercial roofs
- Exposed structural beams in spaces where the wood grain is part of the design aesthetic
- Long-span floor and roof beams
- Arched structures for churches, gymnasiums, and assembly halls

Glulam beams are available in appearance grades (where the wood will be visible) and framing grades (where it will be concealed). They offer the warmth of natural wood with the performance of engineered precision.

## I-Joists

Engineered I-joists consist of an OSB or plywood web with LVL or sawn lumber flanges, forming a lightweight beam that resembles a steel I-beam in cross-section. Benefits include:

- Lightweight compared to solid lumber of equivalent capacity
- Available in depths from 235 mm to 406 mm, spanning longer distances than dimensional joists
- Pre-punched knockouts for running plumbing and HVAC through the web
- Consistent depth and straightness, resulting in flat, squeak-free floors

I-joists have become the standard choice for floor framing in new residential construction across Ontario.

## Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and Plywood

Panel products serve as sheathing, subflooring, and web material in EWPs:

- **OSB:** Made from wood strands oriented in specific directions and bonded with resin. Cost-effective and widely used for wall sheathing and roof decking.
- **Plywood:** Made from thin wood veneers cross-laminated together. Generally considered more moisture-resistant than OSB. Preferred for subfloor applications where moisture exposure is possible.

## Sustainability Advantages

Engineered wood products are inherently more sustainable than solid lumber in several ways:

- **Better resource utilization:** EWPs use smaller, faster-growing trees and lower-grade wood that would otherwise be waste. A log that yields one solid beam can produce multiple LVL or glulam members.
- **Carbon storage:** Like all wood products, EWPs store carbon captured during tree growth. Unlike concrete and steel, wood manufacturing produces a fraction of the greenhouse gas emissions.
- **Reduced waste on site:** Because EWPs are manufactured to exact dimensions and delivered in specified lengths, there is significantly less cutting waste during construction.
- **Certified sourcing:** Most EWP manufacturers in Canada source wood from sustainably managed forests certified by FSC or CSA SFM programs.

## Cost and Availability in Ontario

EWPs are widely available through building supply dealers across Ontario. While the per-piece cost is often higher than dimensional lumber, the total project cost can be comparable or lower because:

- Fewer pieces are needed to achieve the same spans
- Less waste means less material purchased
- Faster installation reduces labour costs
- Consistent quality reduces callbacks and repairs

At AVANORTH, we specify engineered wood products whenever they offer performance or sustainability advantages over traditional lumber. Our framing teams are experienced with all EWP systems and ensure proper installation for lasting structural performance.
